Progression Sessions - A case study

For the past 3 years Progression Sessions have delivered studio sessions with alternative education providers for young people with some of the highest needs in the country. This process of accessing practical learning is intended to support students to re-engage with school after exclusion.

Progression Sessions are currently working at the Selby Centre with the Pears Family School, a PRU based in Islington that hosts students from across London. Progression Sessions offer weekly music sessions based around exploration and creation of music both in a studio setting using technology and with live instrumentation. In small, focused groups, young people are given ownership of the direction of the sessions moving towards songwriting, production or even soundtracking their film clips depending on the day. Our tutors work reflexively to these desires and complex needs but always ensure a positive musical outcome and sense of achievement for the young people involved.

“Several school refusers (poor attenders) have re-engaged with school as a result of the opportunity, coming in and engaging with school because they know they can take part in the project”. – Aaron, Family

School Music Coordinator at the end of last term.
