Honouring Kaye: Mickela’s Journey to 40

For Mickela Hall-Ramsay, turning 40 is more than a milestone. It marks 20 years since the passing of her beloved sister, Kaye, who was born with Down’s syndrome and defied expectations placed upon her.
Despite being told she would never achieve many of the things she went on to accomplish, Kaye learned to read and write, attended college, gained qualifications, held a job, travelled independently and proudly looked after her younger siblings and cousins. To Mickela and her family, she was truly amazing.
Kaye passed away suddenly at just 26, four days before Mickela’s 20th birthday. The experience profoundly changed Mickela’s perspective on life. Mickela made herself a promise: to live life to the fullest, for both of them.
As Mickela approaches 40, she has created a list of 40 things to do before turning 40. Amongst them is a challenge she never expected to take on - completing a half marathon. As someone more accustomed to short sprints than long-distance running, the challenge represents a significant personal achievement.
The half marathon also provides an opportunity to raise funds for a charity supporting people with Down’s syndrome - a cause deeply connected to Mickela’s own experience and her belief in the importance of support, opportunity and recognising potential.
Alongside her brother Christian, Mickela founded HR Sports Academy, a multi-award-winning Community Interest Company that has supported more than 55,000 participants across London. Her work through HR Sports Academy reflects that same commitment to creating opportunities for people to thrive.
Mickela's involvement in the Selby Active Partnership Group for The Selby Trust, representing HR Sports Academy, further strengthens the shared commitment to making physical activity and community opportunities more accessible across the local area.
Her 40th birthday challenge is therefore about three things: honouring Kaye, improving her own health and fitness, and giving back.
